It really is a jungle out there

A week ago I said that David Laws and his Liberal Democrat colleagues would be eaten alive.  I thought it would be because they would be forced by the Tories into making unpopular decisions.  Well, that may still be true.  But I am reviewing my position in the light of the David Laws' resignation.  The press will eat them for whatever reason.

Don't get me wrong.  David Laws must know that he should not claim expenses on a flat for his partner if he wants it to remain private.  Don't buy this privacy line.  He either pays the rent himself and keeps it private. (He has considerable wealth).  Or claims and acknowledges it will (or could be) made public.  It's a choice.  And, by the way, benefit claimants can't get money on a room for their spouse, relative or partner.  So why should an MP?  But that's the double-standard world we live in.

Anyway, Danny Alexander has to make the nasty cuts now.  He may be clever.  But he's not David Laws.  The Liberal Democrats and the Coaltion Government lost something important when Laws went.  It is going to get tougher.  With the media we have, no one in this government is safe - especially the Liberal Democrats.  They are the weaker species in the Westminster jungle and the media know it.  It could be quite a nasty spectator sport.
